Riephoff Sawmill in Allentown, New Jersey

Riephoff Sawmill is a third-generation, family-owned hardwood sawmill in Allentown, New Jersey. Founded in 1964, we specialize in custom sawing and industrial hardwood products for customers throughout the Northeast and Canada.

For more than 60 years, our mill has produced custom-sawn hardwood products for industrial, construction, transportation and manufacturing applications. Crane mat production has been part of the sawmill’s history since the company’s early years, and Riephoff Sawmill continues to manufacture custom hardwood crane mats in a range of sizes for construction, industrial, and heavy-equipment applications. Our other products include shoring, trailer decking, blocking, dunnage, wedges, chocks, outrigger pads, ramps, tree stakes and other custom hardwood products.

Custom Hardwood Milling Since 1964

Riephoff Sawmill has specialized in custom industrial lumber work since its earliest years. The company has grown around the ability to handle unusual dimensions, heavy-duty hardwood products and custom jobs that do not always fit the capabilities of a conventional lumber supplier.

Crane mat production has been part of the sawmill’s history since the company’s early years, and generations of the Riephoff family have continued to adapt the mill, its equipment and its production methods to meet changing customer needs.

Our Mill and Capabilities

Our sawmill is housed in a 15,000-square-foot building with equipment designed for custom hardwood production and large industrial products. The mill includes a 56-inch circular saw, 20-foot Frick carriage, log deck, planer, edger, Holtec package saw, stake pointer and dedicated work space for assembling crane mats.

A seven-acre log yard is used for scaling and storing logs, which are separated by size, species and intended use before processing.

Riephoff Sawmill has also modified and developed equipment over the years to meet the requirements of specialized jobs and improve production of products such as crane mats, blocking, dunnage and custom-sawn timbers.

Built for Custom and Urgent Work

Custom work has always been an important part of Riephoff Sawmill’s business. Our customers come to us for products that may require uncommon dimensions, large timbers, specialized cuts or rapid production for time-sensitive industrial projects.

This flexibility has allowed the sawmill to support customers during major industrial projects, infrastructure work and emergency-response situations throughout its history.

Supporting Major Projects and Emergency Response

Riephoff Sawmill’s history includes supplying heavy timber products for a number of notable and time-sensitive projects where hardwood mats, blocking, shoring and other industrial lumber were needed to support heavy equipment and construction work.

World Trade Center Rescue and Recovery

Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Riephoff Sawmill supplied 110 trailer-loads of crane mats to Ground Zero for cleanup, rescue and recovery operations.

Large cranes were essential to the rescue and recovery work at the World Trade Center site, where substantial base matting and shoring were required to create stable working platforms for heavy equipment.

A September 2007 Pallet Enterprise profile of Riephoff Sawmill documented the company’s role in the effort and quoted owner John Falconio explaining the importance of crane matting for heavy equipment operating in Manhattan.

To help meet the urgent demand, Riephoff Sawmill developed custom equipment that allowed the mill to produce crane mats considerably faster than its previous manufacturing process.

Other Notable Projects

Riephoff Sawmill’s history also includes supplying shoring timbers following the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, industrial lumber during emergency bridge work in Philadelphia, and heavy blocking and other custom timbers for the USS Intrepid during dry-dock work.

Hardwood Species and Materials

Riephoff Sawmill works with oak and a variety of mixed hardwood species for industrial and custom applications. Hardwood species processed by the mill have included oak, maple, gum, poplar, sycamore, sassafras, black locust, beech and birch.

Our lumber is generally supplied green, untreated and not kiln-dried unless otherwise specified. The appropriate species and grade depend on the dimensions, strength requirements and intended application of the finished product.
